Wednesday: TBE

Today we started by covering some contextual information for the novel.  You read and annotated the 3 page article I gave you in class, and then we had a short discussion about what pieces of information were helpful to understanding parts of the novel.  One major takeaway was that there was discrimination among African Americans (North/South, educated/non-educated, light/dark) that existed- not just racial discrimination between African Americans and whites.

Then, we took a close look at the opening pages of the text.

• What are “Dick and Jane” stories and how do they related to the text?
• Who is the narrator and how does that work in this text?
• What role does time/reflection/immediacy play in the role of narration in the text?
