Week 04: Text Types and Part 1/2 Splits

Monday: Text Type Activity

Today we moved the jigsaw groups so that all experts could help the new groups with the assigned text types: diagram, info-graphic, poem, novel excerpt, web page, and scholarly magazine article.

Guiding questions:

  1. What is the text type (TAP)?
  2. Who is the author?
  3. What are the textual features that define the said text type? (headings, sentence length, format, word choice/lexicon, inclusion of literary devices, POV, and on and on…)
  4. What type of knowledge is communicated through the text type?  (TOK link– look to the full diploma students for assistance)
  5. How are details expressed? (objective vs. subjective; overview vs. detail; technical vs. conversational; instructive vs. narrative…)
  6. How can each text contribute to a greater overall understanding of the topic (bees)?

Assignment: Please write a minimum 750 word response to question 6 in terms of the development you have had in your understanding of “bees”.  How has your initial mental picture of “bees” altered based on the different types of knowledge about bees expressed by each of the 6 text types.

Intro, thesis, body, and conclusion is expected here.

Assignment: Remember to watch the video for preparation for class Wednesday.  Look at last week’s info for the link.

Assignment: FOA and IOC prep is ongoing.

Assignment: WT2 is in process and due November 8th.

Wednesday: FOA and Breakout Groups for Part 1/2

Some assignments were passed back and Ms. Johnson reviewed what is needed in a rationale for WT#1.  Remember, don’t loose the copy you got back today as it has your feedback on it and Ms. Johnson is not allowed to give you anymore as per the IB regulations and guidelines.

Logos, ethos, and pathos have been added to the Blacklist for the class.  These terms are now off limits because the majority of you are using them as a replacement for actually creating an argument and focusing on the language issues in Paper 1.  The result of this use is a lazy, ineffective, and mostly off point argument.

Ms. J’s Group–

We covered two articles about the power of naming. I assigned six people roles to develop for a role play for the next class.  Students with assigned roles should work to develop an argument to defend this point of view based on the two articles we read and discussed in class today.  Some LOGICAL fabrication and embellishment of a persona will be expected so long as there is a clear link to the source text for the choice.

Assignment: On-going things like IOCs during encore block, getting FOAs approved and finished, and WT#2 which is due November 8.  Oh, ya, and the reading journal entries of three a week.

Ms. Mac’s Group–

There is a video to watch for the next class.  I hope you have the link.
