After, we read sections from “The Pillow Book” as a class and examined what can be learned about the culture it comes from.

Assignment: Please write a paragraph on a lesson that can be learned by examining a section of “The Pillow Book”.

Assignment: Reading journals due Thursday.

G Block: The Middle East

Today we looked at “Sinbad” to review and then had a quick quiz over the reading.  Here is the PP from today: The Voyage of Sindbad.  With a partner, you made a Venn Diagram comparing Sinbad, Gilgamesh, and Beowulf.

Then we looked at a review of the Koran and the Rumi poetry to clarify a few things about the meaning and purpose of the texts.  After, we read the selection from the “Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam”.  Each person selected a verse to SQUID and then verbally shared this with the class.

Assignment: You were assigned a hero to defend– write one paragraph (or more if needed) to defend your hero’s supremacy against the other two (Gilgamesh, Beowulf, or Sinbad).

Assignment: Reading journals due Thursday.

Thursday: Group 2 Starts

Block E: Africa

Today, Mike, Esther, and Randy started with a nice overview of African literature historical context.  You can see the PP here.

In class, we worked on “How the World was Created from a Drop of Milk”.  You need to finish 2 SQUIDS and turn them in Monday.

Then we started reading “Sundiata: an Epic of Old Mali”.

Today you turned in your HW from last class to Cindy and Dex.  They will grade it and get me scores on Monday.

Then Cathy and Wendy started the China section.  We looked at two sections in groups (Confucius and Tao Te Ching) and then gave presentations on the information. Here is the PP from today.

Assignment: Write a paragraph (at least 1/2 of an A4 page) focused on either one maxim or one paradox (other than those presented on in class today) and how your selected quote relates to you personally.
